Stony Lights Need You!

We are the Stony Lights Volunteer Team and we need your help!

by Ian Welbourne

Every year The Stony Lights Committee organise the exciting lights and events that take place during the day of the Stony Lantern Procession and Light-Switch On.

We now need your help to make sure this fantastic event runs smoothly, efficiently and safely.

Could YOU be the Team Leader we Need?

We are looking for a Team Leader to help manage the volunteers. They are the ones who build and remove the Switch-On stage on the Market Square on the day of the event. This is a vital role and it is not arduous. The volunteers must be able to erect and disassemble the stage quickly at the beginning and end of the day.

Could you and would like to help us out?

If so, please contact me.

Other Roles

If you would like to contribute on a voluntary basis but don’t feel you can take on the team leader role, we’d also love to hear from you.

History

Stony Stratford boasts one of the largest and most attractive displays of Christmas Lights anywhere in the country. People regularly travel long distances to enjoy our spectacular Christmas Lights and the other attractions that Stony Stratford has to offer.

The former Stony Stratford Chamber of Trade started this seasonal tradition in 1961. In 2012 we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of our wonderful Christmas Lights. Stony Stratford Business Association took over organisation, however now a separate committee Christmas Lights at Stony Stratford (CLASS) are responsible. This small and dedicated team of hardworking volunteers creates a fabulous Christmas event. In the build-up, David Odell and his team spend time in cherrypickers and up ladders erecting cables putting up lights. They also put up the Christmas trees, and a whole range of other stuff to create the Christmas winter magic.

Thank you to Stony Lights for permission to use the photograph.

Stony Stratford Lantern Project

Stony Stratford Lantern Project 2021

Stony Stratford Lantern Project 2021 – Update “Santa Claus is Coming to Town!”
by Fiona Trinder

In an effort to keep everyone as safe as possible, we will be selling a limited number of ‘make at home’ lantern kits. Each kit will include all the materials and instructions you need to make a Father Christmas-themed lantern.

We are selling kits for £5 each. They will include a bamboo cane but you will need to provide your own battery powered fairy lights or torch. For safety reasons, we are unable to allow any candles.

To avoid large crowds amassing, there won’t be a Lantern Procession this year. Lantern-makers will make their own way to the Market Square in time for the Switch-On celebrations and carol singing. If you don’t feel comfortable being with others, you can always light your lantern and put it in your window or front garden for everyone to see instead.

Tickets to buy kits will go on sale from Friday 01 October. The on-line link will be shared from the Stony Stratford Lantern Project Facebook Group, along with dates and times for the kit collection sessions at York House Centre.
Any questions? Contact Fiona Trinder: fionatrinder1@gmail.com

We hope you all understand the need for this ‘hybrid’ approach to the 2021 project. In the mean time we’ve got everything crossed that we’ll be back together at York House for the normal workshops in 2022!

Along with this, she has a great skill in connecting with people and promoting all the good things around the area.

Costs

Yes, there is a cost for some of you. While we have always committed to keeping costs down or free, where we can, it’s just no longer feasible. It is time that we apply some small charges to cover some of our costs.

We offer a multi-media approach which helps to attract more visitors your cause or event. The costs we apply reflect only part of the things we do to help promote your activities.

What do you get for your money?

Print –   listing in what’s on in the relevant magazine. We also offer bigger adverts, if required, at reduced costs to certain types of organisations. Editorial space to describe what your group or event is about when available.

Radio Daily updates about local events and activities. Interviews with event organisers

Online – Bi-monthly updates about local events and groups on the website.

Social Media – Regular social media updates

About Stony Radio

At the beginning of the first lockdown some good friends of mine decided to set up Stony Radio. This local radio station has an amazing array of talented DJs who present different genres of music and chat. Over the last year and more we have looked at ways to add more connections between what we and the radio do. I am pleased to say that between us we will be promoting local events on the radio as well on line and in the magazine.
